MLC Academy last night played host to Bill Fisher, Rob Hirons and Massimo Russo as part of the autumn Motions and Emotions clinic tour!

The event was extremely well attended by drummers of all ages and abilities. It was particularly nice to see young drummers and their families attending the event.

Drumming legend, Dave Weckl performing in London

* For more than 20 years, Dave Weckl has developed and maintained a reputation among fans, peers, and the international music community as one of the great living drummers. For this, he has received numerous accolades and honors; Modern Drummer inducted Dave into their Hall of Fame and named him "one of the 25 best drummers of all time."

Next week Dave will be performing in London at the world renowned jazz club, Ronnie Scott's with guitarist, Mike Stern. If you have never seen Dave perform live, please take this opportunity to have a great night out in London and to watch Dave play. It will be breathtaking!

Introducing MLC Academy Drum Teacher, Jonathan Curtis

Jonathan began drumming aged 11, when hejoined his school orchestra. Since then, he has studied with various tutors andprofessionals across the UK and Australia, played with many bands and projects,and recorded in the studio. His band’s debut studio album is due to be releasedthis year, on which he not only performed, but helped to produce.

After achieving a distinction on his TrinityGuildhall Grade 8 exam, Jonathan is now working towards his Associate Diploma.His primary band, Old Maid, play a mixture of hard rock and heavy metal, whilemany of his other projects play jazz and swing standards.

Jonathan currently teaches the drums inNottingham, as well as doing session work around the East Midlands. Hisfavourite styles of drumming are jazz and fusion, and his favourite drummersinclude John Riley and Dave Weckl.

Jonathan’s approach to the drums isartistic and expressive, yet technically based. When teaching, he encourages aformal approach in which the rudiments, correct posture, and a familiarity withthe theory of what is being played combine to create a solid foundation for thestudent; this attitude is reflected in his own playing.

Growing up on heavy metal from the likes ofIron Maiden and Judas Priest, throughout his teens Jonathan progressed onto themore extreme forms of death and black Metal. The drummers of these bands (forexample, George Kollias of Nile, Richard Christy of Death, Horgh of Immortal),pushed the boundaries of what was physically possible with a pair of sticks anda double bass pedal. This influenced Jonathan’s playing, causing him to explorethe more extreme side of drumming. This helped form his technique basedrelaxation and proper form.

Since then, his musical tastes havematured, incorporating strong bebop influences from the likes of Tony Williams,Stan Levey and Jack DeJohnette. These pioneers of the bop style lead to a progressioninto musical playing, time playing and structured soloing, as well as anundeniable focus on swing.

After being exposed to the force of naturethat is Dave Weckl, Jonathan embarked on a journey to understand playing thedrums at the highest level, a journey that is likely as long as it isimpossible. Nevertheless, it is a journey that drives his playing and teachingethos. It is his enthusiasm for this understanding that lies at the heart ofhis drumming and teaching.

When not drumming, Jonathan occasionallydabbles in philosophy, for which he holds a Master’s Degree from a RussellGroup University. However, this has generally proved more useful as acoffee-table certificate than anything else. He also loves to eat fish, and,although happily married, frequents bars and clubs a little too often.

Jonathan plays a Mapex drum kit andBosphorus handmade cymbals exclusively.

Introducing MLC Academy drum teacher, Jake Bernardini

Jake first picked up a pair of sticks at the age of 10. His Dad was a massive jazz fan and organised many gigs and events around London and Nottingham. Through this Jake’s father met a jazz drummer by the name of Tommy Chase, who was known from the 80’s jazz scene in Soho. Jakes dad and Tommy became friends. It was during a visit to Tommy’s where Jake was first introduced to the drum set. Soon after his dad brought him a drum set.

After having lessons at school with no success Jake was fortunate to begin studying with Nottingham based drummer Paul Hose. Jake continued studying with Paul which greatly enhanced his technical and musical ability; this relationship lead to Jake and Paul working together at MLC Academy.

Since Jake started playing he has been able to study with some of the community’s masters of the instrument, including Jim Chapin, Malcolm Garrett and Dom Famularo. Jake has also travelled across the pond to the NAMM show in California, the largest of the international music trade fairs.

Jake’s soul aim in his lessons is to have fun while teaching. Ensuring the environment is an enjoyable one. Jake applies a wide range of different styles and genres of music, so the student’s learning curve is balanced and all-round. However, understanding that each student is individual in their tastes of music and learning style, Jake tailors lessons and caters for each student so they get exactly what they want from their sessions, whether it’s to strive in their technical ability or just to play for fun!

Bill Fisher has been drumming for 20 years and teaching for 10 of them.He has played in many styles of band including blues, technical metal, jazz fusion,contemporary pop covers, and progressive rock. Beginners catch on fast withBill as their teacher, and will often be playing along to music within thefirst session - advanced players are given a detailed analysis of theirtechnique and shown areas for improvement. As the lessons progress they arebroken down into 4 main areas:

Rudimentary Techniques - Basic exercises for the beginner, through to advancedtechniques such as speed training, tension control, the Moeller and Gladstonestrokes, and uniquely - how to apply these concepts to double bass pedal.

Paul Hose’s career as a drummer is colourful and diverse. Not only is Paul known and respected as a teacher, but as a concert performer, and recording artist too.

Paul’s live work includes television broadcast productions, arena shows, festivals, touring theatre shows and much more. Paul has worked with a host of artists from across the musical spectrum including Sarah Jory, The English National Ballet, Grammy award winning Tom Chapin, producer Steve Chapin and guitar virtuoso, Lee Wrathe and he continues to work with the A1 Events production, “To be Frank,” a tribute to Sinatra and the Rat Pack under the musical direction of Matt Stacey. Paul is also the resident drummer at the Riverbank, Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

As an educator Paul has taught and given lectures (in a clinic environment) in his native UK and in Spain, Singapore and Brazil.

Paul also owns the nationally recognised, MLC-Academy in Nottingham, England. MLC-Academy – some ten teachers and over 300 students is a testament to Paul’s hard work and ever-growing passion to offer a high level of music education in a contemporary setting to anyone regardless of age or ability and the Vic Firth Company recognised Paul’s teaching with an award stating “An outstanding contribution to teaching."

2010 was quite a year for Paul - February saw Paul perform with the Chapin family at the Paramount Theatre in the New York city Broadway district, as part of the Jim Chapin memorial concert. Those paying their respects to Jim included Steve Gadd, Dom Famularo, Joe Morello, Jojo Wayer, Bernard Purdie, Swiss Chris, Jack Atherton, Jim Farey, Adam Sharrocks, Jake Bernardini and Mark Houghton to name but a few.

Paul's book, Drumset for beginners (co-authored with Jim Farey) released by Alfred Publishing was launched at the Musik Messe in Frankfurt in March, 2010 and is currently no 7 in Alfred's Publishing's best sellers chart.

John Favicchia is one of today’s top players, New York-based John Favicchia has performed and/or recorded with such greats as Steve Khan, Tony Levin, Chieli Minucci, Lonnie Plaxico, John Benitez, Harvie S, Larry Coryell, Dean Brown, Rachel Z, Chris Geith, Laco Deczi, Mike Pope, John Benitez, Steve Adelson and Bob Malach. His band Dharma All Stars blends various styles into a powerful blast of fusion. His debut, World Time, earned rave reviews and was a Top 10 Critics Pick of the Year in Jazziz Magazine.

Mike Sorrentino has toured and/or recorded with Ritchie Blackmore, Joe Lynn Turner, Drive She Said, James Fox, and many more. A top player in New York’s Broadway circles, he also does many recording sessions for producers around the world from his own studio. This year's Schools out for summer finale concert was held at the Boat club, Nottingham. Over the years the Boat Club has hosted bands such as Ultravox, T. Rex, the Pretenders, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Eric Clapton, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Gary Moore, Fairport Convention, Genesis, Motorhead, the Sex Pistols and many more!

A unique approach to learning drums.

You might be forgiven for assuming that this is another drum book for beginners, and whilst that is the case it's actually really aimed at the person teaching them.

Designed to give a thorough understanding of the essentials, the book guides both student and teacher through a wealth of information from basic beats and fills to jazz, Latin rhythms and chart reading. Throughout, the authors recommend classic drum books that can be used to explore each area further with things concluding with a selection of playalong tracks and charts to put everything into context.

This is a fairly niche area for drum books and one that's not really been explored or catered for, and in this respect it fulfils its objective well whilst perhaps attempting to cover more ground than is important to the average beginner. That said, any teacher that manages to guide their student through the material presented will have set them up with an excellent set of musical skills. (PR)

About Paul

Paul Hose’s career as a drummer is colourful and diverse. Not only is Paul known and respected as a teacher, but as a concert performer, and recording artist too.
Paul’s live work includes television broadcast productions, arena shows, festivals, touring theatre shows and much more. Paul has worked with a host of artists from across the musical spectrum including Sarah Jory, The English National Ballet and he continues to tour with the A1 Events production, “To be Frank,” a tribute to Sinatra and the Rat Pack under the musical direction of Matt Stacey.
As an educator Paul has taught and given lectures (in a clinic environment) in his native UK and in Spain, Singapore and Brazil.
Paul also owns the nationally recognised, MLC-Academy* in Nottingham, England. MLC-Academy – some ten teachers and over 300 students is a testament to Paul’s hard work and ever-growing passion to offer a high level of music education in a contemporary setting to anyone regardless of age or ability.
Paul’s teaching has been recognised by the Vic Firth Company who awarded Paul with “An outstanding contribution to teaching."

‘JIM CHAPIN MEMORIAL TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP’ TO BE LAUNCHED AT THE HARD ROCK CAFÉ IN NEW YORK CITY ON FEBRUARY 17

On February 17, Dom Famularo, the Chapin family and some of the biggest names in the music industry will launch the Jim Chapin Memorial Teacher Scholarship at the famed Hard Rock Café in New York City. The event, which celebrates the legacy of one of drumming’s most dedicated and influential legends, will feature Famularo as master of ceremonies and will include performances by some of today’s leading drummers, along with music by members of the Chapin family (Tom, Jen, Steve, Abigail, Lily, David and Paul Chapin).

Mr. Chapin, who passed away on July 4, 2009, just shy of his 90th birthday, was known as the “Father of Independence”, due in a large part to the revolutionary book he published in 1948 entitled Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer, Vol. I. Still in print today, it became known among drummers simply as “The Chapin Book” and is arguably the most important drum set text ever written. In 1994, Mr. Chapin received two honors for his contributions to music and education: the American Eagle Award, presented by the National Music Council in Washington, DC and a lifetime achievement award from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. And in 1995, he was inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame.

The Jim Chapin Memorial Teacher Scholarship will be given annually, beginning in 2010, and is open to instructors that want to improve their teaching programs. Specific details on how and when to apply will be disseminated in the near future.

Said Famularo, a student and friend of the late drumming icon: “Jim was a one-of-a-kind person and player. He was committed to learning the art of modern drumming and giving that knowledge away. He always had his sticks with him, ready to teach anyone who wanted to know anything about drumming. Jim was all about sharing and the memorial event and scholarship will guarantee that his legacy continues.”

The Jim Chapin Memorial Teacher Scholarship will be maintained by the Percussive Arts Society (PAS). Contributions can be made at the February 17 event and any other time by check payable to PAS/Jim Chapin Scholarship or online.

Nottingham's leading music school, MLC-Academy today launched a new media arm of its website, MLC-Academy TV!

Esperanza Spalding - I Know You Know

A true musician in every sense of the word with an incredible story, yes it's jazz, yes its' got heavy latin influences, but this is a shining example of beautiful songwriting from one of the most talented bass player/singer/songwriter in recent history.

Michel Camilo - From Within

Jaw dropping..... Anthony Jackson, a bass playing legend plays a substantial part in this exhibition of musical excess, don't try this at home...

George Benson - Lately

This is a beautiful interpretation of a classic Stevie Wonder ballad that genuinely captures the essence of the song and presents it in a unique format that is entirely valid in it's own right. Christian McBride display a perfect balance of taste and proficiency; one of those bass performances that sounds like anyone could have played, but they didn't, he did.

Jamiroquai - Space Cowboy (Stoned Again)

Think back, 1994..... Honestly, I would have been 10 years old with little awareness of the London acid jazz scene, thankfully I was later to discover what a 17 year old Stuart Zender was able to create with a band now synonymous with UK pop/funk band (although little remains of that particular band, the story paints an unfamiliar picture of Jason Kay). This song never fails to put a smile on my face.

Incubus - New Born

Cali Pop Rock anyone? OK so this particular track unearths the bands earlier, somewhat heavier roots, this one's for me more than you guys/gals, an early musical influences both as a bass player and vocally. The bands hyper polished, nothing left to chance approach saw the end of an era for original bass player Alex Katunich (aka Dirk Lance), Incubus always reminds me of the time I started really appreciating music.

Damian Rice - 9 Crimes

No need to say too much here... Lisa Hannigan's voice still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Amos Lee - Keep It Loose

This one song kept me sane for three whole months in a Mediterranean holiday resort with nothing but 2009's RnB anthems to be heard. Amos displays a tender and sensitive outlook on life that could warm the coldest of hearts.

Melody Gardot - Worrisome Heart

So there's definitely a theme forming within this playlist, beautiful songs. Melody actually used music as part of her recovery following a terrible cycling accident. As if Ken Pendergast' playing isn't enough to impress, the guys rocking a beard that can't fail to impress.

Herbie Hancock and Corrine Bailey Rae - River

This choice was more of an example of Corrine Bailey Rae and everything she has ever done. You've got to love her honesty as a performer. As if Corrine' astounding vocal wasn't enough, this particular performance showcases some of the worlds most talented musicians, funk and jazz legend Herbie Hancock, jazz legend Wayne Shorter, every drummers wet dream Vinnie Colaiuta and Tal Wilkenfeld who needs no introductions to bass players, if you've not heard her work, find it....

As I prepare a small collection of beginner bass video lessons for D'Addario that will be available in the new year, I find myself looking at some very fundamental aspects of playing the bass guitar, and if I'm honest, it's been a long while since I've looked at these parts of my playing. As we all progress with any learning curve, including learning a musical instrument, it's very easy to leave the fundamentals behind. If we all sat down and were brutally honest with ourselves, we would all probably find there's still room for improvement. Bring that honest about your own abilities is not easy, but very rewarding. Give it a go, find those old chromatic finger exercises and major scale studies, be brutal...

Musicians Encouraged to Rock Again as ‘Weekend Warriors’ Hits Birmingham!

On 28th November 2009, Birmingham’s ex-musicians are invited to Professional Music Technology, Lawley Middleway, and encouraged to return to their forgotten instruments to show their passion for rock music has lost none of its enthusiasm – or its potential to fill local venues – since its origins back in the sixties.

The Weekend Warriors programme, gives 35-60 year old lapsed musicians the unique opportunity to re-join a band and re-live their musical youth. MLC-Academy, a nationally recognised music school, and Professional Music Technology will group enthusiasts into bands, and provide them with equipment, rehearsal space and mentors as they become Birmingham’s Weekend Warriors. The bands will jam together, decide upon a set, rehearse and then perform in a concert to a live audience of family and friends on stage at Professional Music Technology, Birmingham.

Tim McLoughlin, Primary School Head teacher and Back to the Future band member agrees; “This has been a fantastic experience for all of us. Firemen, sales directors and medical reps have all been united by the common goal of getting back on stage and performing once more.

Craig Glover, Professional Music Technology, said: “We can’t wait to get Weekend Warriors underway. We’re convinced there are people in Birmingham that are desperate to fulfil an ambition to perform live in a band but have never had the opportunity. We’re going to help them get there…”

Paul Hose (CEO of MLC-Academy) said; “Weekend Warriors gives those guys who have had to shelve their instruments to bring up their kids, pay their mortgage or focus on their jobs, a chance to get back to the music they once loved. The sheer enthusiasm already generated from our schemes all over the country confirms there’s a very real demand from middle aged rockers to be able to take up their instruments and form bands again. We’re thrilled to be helping more people play music again.”

2005 brought us many things: Live 8, the birth of YouTube, Lance’s Armstrong’s record 7th straight Tour De France victory, but more importantly, the birth of the energetic, melody filled indie pop by the Northampton natives, New Cassettes.

New Cassettes you say? Aren’t they MiniDiscs? Not in this case! They are a 5 piece collective consisting of Tom Stubbs on vocals, Nik Gray on guitar/vocals, Owen Reed on guitar/vocals, Tommy Francis on drums, and Dan Battison on bass. One could argue that they have already reached their initial goal of forming the band with the purpose of “having a good time”, judging by their plethora of high profile gigs, such as playing Glastonbury 2007, BBC’s Electric Proms, Lattitude, Witness, Summer Sundae, and also supporting the likes of The Strokes and Adam Green.

Their first single, Young Won’t Stop, was released on Fantastic Plastic Records, home to The Guillemots and iLikeTrains. It instantly became a favourite of Radio 1 DJs and tastemakers Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq, and was also featured on Channel 4’s popular comedy The Inbetweeners. The follow-up single, Recover/Retreat, was released at the end of 2007 on Last Space Recording, the label of Mercury Music Prize nominees and fellow Northampton band Maps. That’s not all - they also reached the final few in Channel 4’s Road to V competition, whose past winners include The Young Knives and Bombay Bicycle Club.

After spending the last year crafting their sound, they are now ready to unleash their debut album The Art Of… to the general public. The album is packed full of ten of the most upbeat, cheery and contagiously catchy anthems that you will hear all year. In addition to featuring their previous singles and last years download-only single, Hearts Don’t Beat Right, other stand-outs include the gang-vocal led Lighthouse, and the dancing shoes requiring, driving rhythms of Carnivals, which is possibly a nod to Northampton’s shoemaking ‘Cobbler’ roots! Plus there are also odes to their heroes (if their myspace page is to go by!) on the rifftastic Huey Lewis and the frenetic Lucille. Some would say the perfect mixtape.

With the album ready and a Japan release date planned, it’s all hands on deck for the band! So press play, as New Cassettes are all wound up and ready to go!

*** THE MONEY ***

The Money are a four piece pop rock band Based in Nottingham.
They formed a year and half ago and within 8 months had written, recorded and produced there debut album ‘A Secret Shared’. There next step was to create a fan base and they have done this in a very Unique manor.

They have been gigging out in Rhodes 5 nights a week for the past 3 months and in there time there have sold over 700 of there albums, bring our total to well over 1000 sales.

Not only this but they have added over 1500 friends to there social networking sites, people that they have met face to face. There mailing list has over 600 new contacts, waiting to see them live around the country and Europe

So here's a thought about being busy.... Which, thankfully I am at the moment. I wouldn't be able to keep on top of it all without a few lists, Set Lists, To Do Lists, Playlists, Diary etc.

I am trying something with all of this, I'm literally crossing things off my lists and for the first time in years I feel like I'm actually achieving things. After spending a wonderful summer with a much less complicated work load (I still protest that I was working hard!!) it's been touch to see the forest for the trees never mind actually get anything done. Thank you lists.

Nottingham music school, MLC-Academy in conjunction with city centre venue, The Central present an amazing master class with Thomas Leeb.

Sunday 15th November 1-4pm at the CENTRAL, Nottingham, £20 per person

Austrian born Thomas Leeb plays a style he calls 'the bastard child of acoustic fingerstyle'. This style owes as much to percussive techniques as traditional fingerstyle guitar as his tunes are usually punctuated by slaps, pops and beats. Adding to the overall effect is his frequent use of ringing harmonics. The resulting blur of busy hands and fingers has to be seen to be believed.

His repertoire consists of self-penned numbers, traditional tunes and occasional covers of Guns 'n' Roses, Bjork and Bob Marley songs..

Leeb released his first album, the now out of print Reveller, as a precocious 17 year old. However, his unique style didn't come into full force until his 1999 album Riddle. He has since released four further albums and toured Asia, North and South America and Europe.

Along the way he has picked up a number of influential fans such as Eric Roche who was his guitar teacher, "for about five minutes and then I heard him play" and Guthrie Govan who thinks that "what Thomas does on an acoustic guitar probably shouldn't be legal."
