Introducing MLC Academy Drum teacher, Paul Hose

Paul Hose’s career as a drummer is colourful and diverse.  Not only is Paul known and respected as a teacher, but as a concert performer, and recording artist too.

Paul’s live work includes television broadcast productions, arena shows, festivals, touring theatre shows and much more. Paul has worked with a host of artists from across the musical spectrum including Sarah Jory, The English National Ballet, Grammy award winning Tom Chapin, producer Steve Chapin and guitar virtuoso, Lee Wrathe and he continues to work with the A1 Events production, “To be Frank,” a tribute to Sinatra and the Rat Pack under the musical direction of Matt Stacey. Paul is also the resident drummer at the Riverbank, Trent Bridge, Nottingham.

As an educator Paul has taught and given lectures (in a clinic environment) in his native UK and in Spain, Singapore and Brazil.

Paul also owns the nationally recognised, MLC-Academy in Nottingham, England. MLC-Academy – some ten teachers and over 300 students is a testament to Paul’s hard work and ever-growing passion to offer a high level of music education in a contemporary setting to anyone regardless of age or ability and the Vic Firth Company recognised Paul’s teaching with an award stating “An outstanding contribution to teaching."

2010 was quite a year for Paul - February saw Paul perform with the Chapin family at the Paramount Theatre in the New York city Broadway district, as part of the Jim Chapin memorial concert. Those paying their respects to Jim included Steve Gadd, Dom Famularo, Joe Morello, Jojo Wayer, Bernard Purdie, Swiss Chris, Jack Atherton, Jim Farey, Adam Sharrocks, Jake Bernardini and Mark Houghton to name but a few.

Paul's book, Drumset for beginners (co-authored with Jim Farey) released by Alfred Publishing was launched at the Musik Messe in Frankfurt in March, 2010 and is currently no 7 in Alfred's Publishing's best sellers chart.

Here is what people have said about the book:

Drumset For Beginners: The Teacher's Guide, is a very well thought out way of approaching a very difficult topic...teaching beginners. How many of us who teach have asked "How do I start someone playing the drums?"..."How do I keep it simple?"....it can be intimidating. Paul and Jim have put together a program that simplifies the process, with an emphasis on fun, fundamentals, and patience! I also like the idea of this being a resource for self-teaching. The play-along tracks are well produced, and cover several styles...another good idea for beginners, especially drummers...being multi-dimensional. Congratulations to you both!

David Garibaldi - Tower of Power

This book is a concise and cohesive method for student AND teacher. Its benefits are many and varied, covering aspects of playing and understanding of the instrument that will prove invaluable!

Bobby Arechiga - Strongheart, UK/International Session & Teacher

I think it's great, just the right balance of keeping teachers and students on a steady course without being too prescriptive and at the same time opening people up to lots of music and other teaching and listening material and giving them the options to go wherever they want.

Bruce Parry - Freelance percussionist, Sabian European Band & Orchestral Specialist

I love your book, there are lots of great hints and concept for the journey understanding or better "overstanding" the art of Drumming.

We always have to take it Back, whatever level we are on, "Back to the Basics, fill in the gaps and wholes. We do have to understand how important it is to have a great solid foundation in modern drumming., why? because we, drummers, are the "Backbone" of contemporary music" Clear Thought, Clear Speech, Clear Drum...

…this is an incredible tool, great work...

Swiss Chris - John Legend, Gloria Gaynor, Founder of S.W.I.S.S. Charity

I get to see lots of drum books from many drummers around the world and the books I like must have good structure, easy to follow lessons, be musical as well as rhythmic and inspiring, Paul and Jim have achieved this with this book and I would recommend you add this to your drum book library.
